An artjournal page from our GD - Lori Woods

Hello again 13arts fans! This is my final guest designer work for 13arts and I can't thank Aida and Marta enough for the opportunity. Today I have made a page to document the changes in my life that will shortly be happening- I am moving to a new town and will be starting a new job and feel like these changes are going to make life better for me in a number of ways.

I started with a sheet of His & Hers paper cut into strips and laid these down in alternating black and white colours. I then used the large honeycomb chipboard as a stencil and painted areas on the page in metallic bronze paint. I took some small pieces of honeycomb chipboard and attached these to the page with gel medium, adding some light grey grit for texture. Once this was dry I sprayed on old gold and used pistachio green rainbow duo to add some colour. To finish the page off I added some cogs and wire, and some alphabet stickers.

Lori Woods and her great TUTORIAL

Hello again 13arts fans. Today I have a mixed media project for you to light up your life!

This lantern started as an old christmas decoration and I decided to give it a makeover. I removed the glass panels from the frame and put them to the side. I primed the frame with black gesso, and then roughly mixed together metallic bronze paint, Expresso paint and clear Crackle glaze and painted the frame with the mixture. Once it was dry, I added some drops of Turquoise mist to chalk-finish medium to give a very matte mixture and used this to highlight the cracks and to give a faded look. I then dry brushed white gesso over the frame to highlight some areas. Now for the galaxy look!

Because I wanted the outside of the glass to remain smooth, I had to paint the galaxy effect in reverse. First, white gesso was splattered over the glass to create the look of stars and once this was dry, I added swirls and areas of Gold Glitter paint to create the effect of constellations. Then I poured some acrylic liquid medium into a spray bottle and covered the glass in it to seal the layers so far and create a little dimension. (This stuff is amazing! So versatile and so many things you can do with it!)

Next I took my turquoise mist, dirty pink mist and Vivid violet paint and used a paintbrush to create areas of colour around the glitter; blend the colours together, leave areas where the colour pools, let the colours dry and then apply further coats to create areas of light and more intense colour- basically just play about until you are happy with the effect! I took my spray bottle of liquid medium again, but this time applied a very, very thin layer of the medium as too much can cause the mists to run, so I did multiple thin layers to seal the colours.

Now to finish the galaxy effect. Over the areas of colour I painted a very light layer of white gesso and over the rest of the glass I painted a thicker layer of black gesso (the reason why will soon become clear!), and when this was dry I put the glass panels back into the lantern.

This is the finished lantern, with a shabby, vintage-effect frame and beautiful galaxy panels, which looks pretty enough. But, if you place a candle or light source inside the lantern and dim the lights a little.......

........ the areas of white gesso allow the light to shine through the glass and create a lovely illuminated galaxy effect!

Lori Woods- our new talented Guest Designer

Z pewnością polubicie jej prace tak jak my, ale najpierw dowiedzmy się czegoś więcej o Lori.

It's the most exciting time of the month- introducing new Designers! Today we would like to show you a beautiful layout by our new talented Guest Designer- Lori Woods from UK! We sure you will love her projects as much as we do! But first let's learn something more about Lori.

Hi everyone, I'm Lori from the UK and I'm so excited to be a guest on the 13arts blog!

I've always been crafty and used to do traditional scrapbooking but since I discovered mixed media a few years ago, I haven't looked back. I love mixed media- the textures, the mess, the freedom to create outside the lines! My favourite techniques all involve texture, whether it's using stencils or paste, clay and embellishments, or fussy cutting paper designs to create focal points. My style ranges from steampunk/ industrial grunge to sometimes quite floral and girly, with a bit of clean and simple, and messy rainbows of colour in between. I like to constantly challenge myself to try new techniques and take my inspiration from the world around me.

For my first Guest Designer post, I made a layout about being free to create and be artistic. The feathers on the beautiful His & Hers collection always make me think of wings, so that's exactly what I decided to make from them. I started with a sheet of Aria- Sunny song paper, a clock chipboard from the His & Hers set and Ayeeda pearl mist in Old Gold. I used the chipboard as a stencil and sprayed the mist over the paper to both create a clock background and colour the chipboard. Using the His & Hers Butterflies stencil I added some text, then smeared some gel medium over areas of the page and sprinkled on silver mika flakes and black glitter. I cut out all the feathers from a sheet of His & Hers Feathers, scored down the midline and folded slightly to give them some shape and then started to construct the wings. I used gel medium to attach all the feathers together and finished off each wing with a metal clock embellishment. I glued down the clock chipboard onto the page, wrapped some sisal around it then stuck down the wings. A few feathers that I had left over were placed in the corner and glued down with a clock embellishment and I finished off the page with some text stickers and butterflies cut from the Aura Rosa collection.
